Cave paintings show that the equine from which practically all modern horses originated, looked like the Przewalsky Horse. They had strong heads, a well-balanced body and erect manes. The domestication of horses began about 6000-5000 years ago in the steppes of central Asia. First they were used for meat and milk and then they began to serve as pack animals that made the early man mobile.
Settled tribes used horses for agricultural needs: plowing and pulling weights, so heavy draft breeds appeared. They changed the practice of farming and industry. Produce could be transported long distances, creating trade with remote regions and establishing contacts with the outside world. Raw materials, stone and timber could be moved to the cities.
Nomadic tribes relied on horses heavily and used them for food, shelter, transport and war. The horse was an effective weapon and empires from Egypt to Mexico crumbled before the mounted enemies. Later, more refined and elegant breeds appeared that were used as harness animals. Nowadays, there exist draft, light, multipurpose horses and ponies.

Even nowadays a lot of wild horses roam Western USA. They are the feral descendants of the Mustangs, which originated from Spanish mounts. Large herds of mustangs are a serious problem for the USA, because these animals destroy their habitat. The government captures hundreds of Mustangs each year and puts them up for adoption. Such wild creatures are rather difficult to tame, but they are ideal for people who prefer to ride strong, endurable and willful horses.
