There are three types of domestic horses: the heavy, the light and the pony. The heavy draft horses are very strong and are characterized by wide body and broad back. Their withers are often higher than the croup to increase pulling power. The body is well muscled, especially over the loins and quarters; the legs are massive and short; the action is short and with maximum traction. The average height of these horses is from 16 to 18 hands. The first known horse of this type was the Great War Horse of the Middle Ages, which is extinct today.
Almost every country has its own breed of draft horse because they were indispensable for agriculture, especially in regions with heavy soil. The most popular draft horses are: American Cream Draft, Bashkir, Belgian, Clydesdale, Dutch Draft, Italian Heavy Draft, Russian Heavy Draft, Shire, Suffolk Punch and others.
Light breeds are suitable for riding and their backs allow for a saddle to be fitted easily. Their withers are clearly defined; the legs are long and slender. The average height for this type is 15-17.2 hands. These horses are usually refined, graceful, with arched neck and small head. Their action is low, long and economical.
There are a lot of breeds within this type: Akhal Teke, Alter Real, American Saddlebred, Andalusian, Appaloosa, Arabian, Azteca, Bashkir Curly, Barb, Buckskin, Criolla, Dutch Warmblood, Egyptian, Falabella, Hackney, Kazakh, Konik, Lusitano, Miniature Horses, Mongolian, Morgan, Orlov Trotter, Pinto, Quarter Horse and many others.
Ponies differ from other horses by their size and character. Their body is deeper; the head is large in proportion to the body. These animals are surefooted and have a developed sense of self-preservation. The height of these creatures is from 10 to 15 hands.
This group of horses includes the following breeds: Abyssinian, American Walking Pony, Banker, Carpathian, Faeroes, Guangxi, Hackney, Icelandic, New Foundland, Norwegian Fjord, Quarter Pony, Shetland, Vyatka, Welsh Pony, Cob and others.
